FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Segers Aero Corp. purchased a 130,000-square-foot facility near the Fairhope airport this week, which formerly housed Crestview Aerospace and L3 Communications.

The company closed on the property Wednesday for $3,638,000, said Tom Hassett, the chief financial officer for Segers.

“We think it’s a great location,” said Howard Hadley, chief executive officer of Segers. “We also think our timing is good.”

Segers Aero provides aviation services to fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, involving military and commercial customers worldwide, specializing in engine maintenance and repair.

On June 5, the Fairhope Economic and Industrial Development Board approved several tax incentives for Segers to locate in Fairhope.

The company will be moving its North American headquarters from Opa-Locka, Fla., to Fairhope and expects to begin operations by late summer, Hadley said.

He said approximately 40 current employees in Opa Locka will move to the new facility in Fairhope. They will need 75 to 80 people initially and expect to hire 35 to 40 people later this year, he said.

“The recruiting of aerospace and aviation companies has been a long-time focus of the Baldwin Economic Development Alliance, and it is great when a quality company like Segers chooses to locate in Baldwin County,” said Donna Givens, chairman of the board of BCEDA, which facilitated the location of Segers to Fairhope.

Segers moved part of its facility to Crestview, Fla., last year, with the intention of moving its headquarters there, according to press accounts at that time. Hadley said the change in plans to move to Fairhope was a business decision based on the incentives package and other factors, including moving into an existing building rather than constructing one.

Although the company will be moving its headquarters to Fairhope, it will maintain a smaller office in Crestview of approximately 15 employees, he said.

" What are the "tax incentives" please? Or are they a top secret too. Homeowners are having to foot the bill for just about everything around here via higher p. taxes/utility bills, year after year. Corps. ought to pay their fair share too. "
